If you are no longer participating in a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) program or have been advised by your retailer that your SwitchDin Droplet is no longer required, you can safely remove and dispose of the device by following the steps below.
The Droplet is a small, low-voltage internet-connected device. It is safe to handle — there are no high-voltage connections inside.
Droplet One versions:
Before You Start
- The Droplet is the small white/grey box (roughly the size of a paperback book). It is usually mounted next to your home internet router. If it isn't near the router, it will be next to your inverter or battery, connected back to your router by a long ethernet cable.
- You do not need an electrician to remove it — it only has plug-in cables (power adapter and ethernet).
- Removing the Droplet will not affect the operation of your solar system, battery, or home electricity supply.
- Allow about 5 minutes to complete this process.
Step 1 — Unplug the Power Supply
- Locate the power adapter (typically black or white) plugged into a standard wall outlet — or sometimes into a power board near your router, inverter, or battery.
- Switch off the wall outlet at the switch.
- Unplug the power adapter from the wall.
- Follow the cable to the Droplet and unplug the small round (barrel) connector from the side of the Droplet.
You should see the lights on the front of the Droplet switch off within a few seconds.
Step 2 — Unplug the Ethernet Cable
- Look for the blue or grey ethernet cable plugged into the back or side of the Droplet (it looks like an oversized telephone plug).
- Squeeze the small plastic tab on top of the connector and gently pull it out of the Droplet.
- The other end of the cable will be plugged into your home router (or, in some installs, your inverter or battery) — you can leave that end in place, or unplug it too if it is no longer needed.
Step 3 — Remove Any Other Cables
Some installations may also have:
- A second ethernet cable (if the Droplet was bridging two devices) — unplug it the same way.
- A USB cable (small rectangular or oval-shaped plug) — gently pull it straight out.
- A 4G antenna screwed into the side of the Droplet — unscrew it anti-clockwise by hand.
Once all cables are removed, the Droplet should come away freely. If it is mounted with velcro tape or a bracket, you can simply lift or unclip it.
Step 4 — Dispose of the Droplet Responsibly (E-Waste Recycling)
The Droplet contains electronic components and must not be placed in your household rubbish bin. Please drop it off at one of the following free e-waste recycling options:
-
Officeworks — every Officeworks store has a free "Bring I.T. Back" recycling bin near the entrance. The Droplet, its power adapter, and any cables can all be placed in this bin.
Locate your nearest store: officeworks.com.au/information/about-us/community/environment/recycling -
Your local council e-waste drop-off point — most councils run a free electronics recycling service at their waste transfer stations.
Find your nearest: recyclingnearyou.com.au
You do not need to wipe or factory reset the device — there is no personal data stored on it.
Step 5 — Let Us Know (Optional)
If you'd like, you can send a quick confirmation to support@switchdin.com so we can mark the device as decommissioned on our system. Please include:
- Your address (or NMI if you have it)
- The date you removed the device
- The serial number printed on the Droplet's label (begins with B827
…), if visible
